4 Things to Know When Getting New Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is a popular choice for homeowners who want to improve the appearance and durability of their homes. However, with so many options available, choosing the right vinyl siding can be overwhelming. Here are four things to know when getting new vinyl siding.

  1. Consider the Thickness of the Siding

The thickness of the vinyl siding is an important factor to consider. Thicker siding is generally more durable and better able to resist damage from hail, wind, and other types of impact. However, thicker siding is also more expensive. If you live in an area with extreme weather conditions, it may be worth investing in thicker siding to ensure the longevity of your home's exterior. Vinyl siding is measured in inches, with most falling between .042 and .046 inches. .042 is the minimal thickness we recommend for most lap siding. However, for 6" or 6.5" beaded siding, we recommend .046 or higher. Beaded vinyl siding tends to oil-can more easily than other types, so thickness matters that much more.

  1. The Underlayment Matters

What gets installed behind your new siding is important. At minimum, a vapor barrier should be installed. Tyvek being the brand most are familiar with, this paper-like membrane protects against moisture and wind, and is code for many jurisdictions. You can also opt for a foam-like insulation board to be installed your new siding. Unlike standard house-wraps, insulation actually aids in the home's thermal efficiency and is measured by R-value. The higher the R-value, the better. R-values for exterior insulation are typically between 1 and 5, the higher R-values generally being more expensive. When considering the cost of insulation, you should weigh it against potential energy bill savings as well as the value of the overall comfort of your home.

  1. Choose the Right Color and Style

Vinyl siding comes in a wide range of colors and styles, so it's important to choose one that complements your home's existing aesthetic. Straight-lap, dutch-lap, beaded, vinyl shake, fish-scale and vertical are some of the popular choices for vinyl siding profiles, and the color choices and combinations are practically endless. Consider the color of your roof, doors, shutters and trim when selecting your vinyl siding color. Additionally, choose a style that matches the architecture of your home and neighborhood, whether that be a traditional look or a modern aesthetic.

  1. Hire a Professional to Install Your Siding

Installing vinyl siding can be a challenging and time-consuming process. It's important to hire a professional siding contractor to ensure that the job is done correctly. A professional will be able to assess your home's exterior, recommend the right type of siding for your needs, and properly install the siding to ensure it lasts for years to come. Non professionals often make the mistake of nailing vinyl siding too tightly or not installing certain channels when required. This can lead to a wavy appearance, oil-canning and pieces becoming loose in the future. Unfortunately, even some contractors that perform vinyl siding replacement regularly can make these same mistakes, so be sure to vet your contractor before hiring them.

Getting new vinyl siding can be an excellent way to improve the appearance and durability of your home. By considering the thickness of the siding, choosing high-quality vinyl, selecting the right color and style, and hiring a professional to install it, you can ensure that your new siding looks great and lasts for many years.
